The left photo shows a view of the Aurora Australis taken from the Discovery spacecraft. The photograph shows a band of airglow (extending from the middle to the right side) whose existence is attributable to atomic oxygen, at an altitude of 80 to 120 kilometers above the Earth.


The photo on the right shows a view of the Aurora Australis taken from Antarctica, whilst the bottom four photos show the Northern hemisphere equivalent Aurora Borealis.
